The National Curriculum (2014) – Science (KS1-2 p3) states:
‘A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.’
Principles of Science within Masefield Primary School:
- Children at Masefield understand what Science is, what it is for and why we do it.
- They are inquisitive, showing an interest and willingness to question and investigate the wider world around them.
- The use of modelling concepts features prominently within progressive sequences of lessons.
- They demonstrate an enjoyment of Science, being able to talk and discuss their thoughts, feelings and opinions using technical, scientific vocabulary.
- The children can engage science through planning, enquiring, exploring and investigating questions independently using a range of approaches, including:
- Observing over time
- Identifying and classifying
- Pattern seeking
- Research using secondary sources
- Fair testing
- Children use Kagan structures to collaborate with their peers, undertaking, where appropriate, practical, ‘hands-on’ activities using a broad range of equipment, including computing.
- They can place and explain their findings within scientific contexts.
Delivery and impact of the Principles of Science teaching:
Delivery of these Principles will be achieved through the effective and creative delivery of the National Curriculum (2014) using Collins Snap Science as a backbone to teaching and learning from Years 1 through to 6.
The scheme’s lessons are taken and adapted to the specific and individualistic needs of each class, which includes the differentiation of tasks, inclusion of mental starters and the use of creative modelling to bring scientific concepts to life. Where possible, Science will contain cross-curricular links to other subject areas, with a specific focus on Mathematics, English and Computing, enabling pupils’ to apply their knowledge, understanding and skills.
Ultimately, our aim is to ensure that children leave Masefield with a love of science and a sense of wonder for the world around them. Our children need to possess the skills, knowledge, understanding and determination to investigate the unknown and be creative and methodical in their approach to discovering new things.
