Forest School

What is Forest School?

Forest School is a child-led approach to learning that incorporates children’s right to play, explore the outdoors, and experience success in a meaningful and personal way. It provides children with the freedom to use their own learning styles while engaging in various activities in a natural setting.

A Unique Approach to Learning

Forest School is a unique way of building independence and self-esteem in young children, exposing them to the natural world at a time when understanding our environmental impact is more important than ever. It is a child-centred and flexible programme that empowers children to take ownership of their learning and discover new ways to succeed outside of the traditional classroom.

Outdoor Learning at Masefield

At Masefield Primary School, Forest School offers children the chance to enjoy creative, hands-on experiences in the outdoors in a safe and supportive environment. Through these sessions, pupils learn about the natural environment, how to handle risk safely, and—most importantly—how to use their initiative to solve problems and collaborate with others.

Personal Development and Wellbeing

Forest School experiences are carefully planned with the purpose of promoting personal growth. They are proven to support increased self-esteem, improve concentration, attendance, and behaviour, as well as enhance academic achievement. These sessions give children the tools to thrive both socially and emotionally.

Sustainability and Environmental Awareness

We aim to foster a deep love and respect for the natural world through stimulating outdoor learning. Forest School inspires children to value biodiversity and develop a strong sense of responsibility for protecting the environment. Our sessions, led by Mrs Walton—a Level 3 trained practitioner—are delivered through six-week enrichment blocks and curriculum-linked experiences each half term. Lessons are tailored to reflect the changing seasons, resources, and challenges of the natural world.

Inclusive and Values-Driven Learning

At Masefield, children's needs are at the heart of all we do. Our Forest School provision reflects our ethos by promoting inclusivity, celebrating individuality, and valuing cultural diversity. It not only enhances and extends the curriculum but also nurtures children to become lifelong learners who are confident, compassionate, and capable of making positive choices about their futures.

Cross-Curricular Connections

Forest School experiences create a wealth of opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Links can be made with many core and foundation subjects, such as Science, Mathematics, English, Geography, and Art and Design, reinforcing and enriching classroom learning in dynamic and meaningful ways.

Preparing for Life Beyond School

Through respectful interaction with others and the natural world, children develop self-knowledge, self-esteem, and self-confidence. Working together to solve problems, they also build essential communication and negotiation skills. These are life-long skills that prepare pupils not only for success at school but for the wider world beyond the classroom.
