The House System at Masefield Primary School
In September 2025, we launched our new House System. The purpose of our House System is to foster authentic relationships between all members of our learning community to create an environment where all feel connected, safe, seen, and valued. Through our House System, we aim to:
-
Generate a feeling of belonging among pupils and staff;
-
Increase pupil achievement: academically, socially, and emotionally;
-
Increase intrinsic motivation;
-
Increase pupil and family engagement;
-
Develop pupil efficacy in leadership and;
-
Develop school culture through unique traditions.
House Sorting
Pupils and staff will gather together in year group phases as anticipation builds for the Sorting Ceremony. The ceremony opens with speeches from the Staff House Leaders, each sharing their vision and hopes for their House, helping to set the tone and inspire pride and belonging. Following this, the sorting itself begins in a moment of excitement and suspense. One by one, children and staff will step forward to press a large red button. Upon pressing it, a dramatic animation will play on the screen, revealing the House that has ‘chosen’ them. This element of randomness is key—it ensures that every individual feels selected and connected to their House in a meaningful way, rather than simply placed.
For any new pupils who join during the school year, the sorting will take place during the weekly Friday Good News Assembly, ensuring they too receive a warm welcome and moment of celebration. New staff members will also be chosen by their house in the same way. Looking ahead, from September 2026 onwards, the sorting of new Year One pupils will become an annual whole-school tradition. This special event will continue to foster a sense of unity, celebration, and belonging across the school community, as each new member is officially welcomed into their House in front of peers and staff.
Our Houses
Each House has unique properties such as its own colour, symbols, nation of heritage, history and more. Over time, each House also starts to take on its own values and personality driven by the culture of the pupils and staff within it.
When pupils are sorted into their Houses, we like to say that pupils are chosen based on the qualities and characteristics that they value, rather than the ones they necessarily exhibit on that day. This casts a vision for each pupil to grow into the positive attributes of their House.
It is important to communicate the value of these tight-knit learning and leadership communities to parents and staff. Having the broadest level of buy in and understanding from others will encourage the pupils and drive more and more excitement behind the Houses, the points, Spirit Days, the championships and the school overall.

House Team Traditions
Please see the information below to learn about each House Team's traditions.
Amistad
During Spirit Days, as the House of Friendship, Amistad has a tradition of surprising members of our school with notes of appreciation pinned on our wall of friendship — regardless of another pupil’s or staff member's House. This simple tradition encourages pupils in the House of Amistad that it is always important to show kindness and appreciation towards others.
Isibindi
During Spirit Days, pupils in the House of Isibindi can nominate a fellow House member who has shown quiet or bold courage—whether by standing up for someone, speaking out with honesty, or trying again after failure. Nominations are pinned on our wall of courage and one pupil (chosen by the Staff and Pupil House Leaders) is awarded The House of Courage Badge, which they wear for the following term. This tradition encourages pupils in the House of Isibindi to recognise and value courage in everyday acts, reinforcing the idea that bravery takes many forms.
Rêveur
During Spirit Days, Rêveur has a tradition of pupils setting a personal dream or goal for the term. These are pinned on our wall of dreams to remind pupils of their individual dreams and goals. This tradition encourages pupils in the House of Rêveur to be ambitious and to dream big!
Sollevare
During Spirit Days, the House of Sollevare gathers in a Shine Circle, where each pupil is invited to say write and say something uplifting about the person to their right. These messages are pinned on our wall of upliftment. This tradition encourages pupils in the House of Sollevare to show gratitude, builds bonds and it leaves everyone feeling valued and seen.
